Some recipes end with dishes. This one ends with a towel and permission to stay home.
You can put this little bath ritual together with three everyday grocery store ingredients. No specialty petals, essential oils, or trip to a craft store.
What you need for one bath
- ½ cup plain rolled oats, without flavorings or sweeteners
- ¼ cup plain, unsweetened canned coconut milk, stirred before measuring
- 3 plain green tea bags, without added flavorings
- 2 cups water for brewing the tea
You will also need a heatproof bowl or jug, a clean thin cotton washcloth, and cotton kitchen string. Find the oats in the breakfast aisle, coconut milk with canned or international foods, and green tea in the tea aisle.
How to make it
- Brew the three tea bags in two cups of hot water for five minutes. Remove the bags and let the tea cool to lukewarm before taking it near the bath.
- Place the oats in the center of the washcloth. Gather the corners and tie securely with kitchen string, leaving space for the oats to swell.
- Run a comfortably lukewarm bath. Add the cooled tea and coconut milk, then swirl the water to disperse them.
- Submerge the oat pouch for about five minutes and gently squeeze it under the water. Keep the solids inside rather than scrubbing with the pouch.
- Enjoy a short soak, about ten minutes. Expect lightly cloudy water with a subtle tea tint, not a dramatic milk-white bath.
- Remove the pouch before draining. Rinse your skin with clean lukewarm water if residue remains, pat gently, and moisturize with a product suited to your skin.
- Discard the wet oats, wash and dry the cloth, and clean the tub promptly to remove residue and possible tea marks.
What each ingredient brings
The oats release a milky-looking infusion when soaked and squeezed. Finely processed colloidal oatmeal has evidence for helping dry, itchy skin, but rolled oats in a washcloth are a different preparation. Cleveland Clinic explains colloidal oatmeal.
Coconut milk adds a creamy appearance, while brewed green tea brings a subtle tint and the pleasure of preparing something for yourself. The fragrance will be mild after dilution.
